PROGRAM FOR THE PENITENCIARY FIELD
"Many other mentally ill people will never perform acts of violence, specially if they receive adequate treatment. Even for those who have acted violently at any given moment, this violence shouldn't be associated with them throughout their lives, but instead should be considered as acts which may be properly controlled with adequate medical and psychiatric treatment and assistance.-
Our society, proud of having closed down psychiatric wards, has to open prisons which are never enough to house some of their former inmates; individuals who have harmed others as well as themselves.
It is a commonly accepted utilizing the penitentiary system as a warehouse or nursery, as a preventive measure for those individuals affected by pathologies, in this case they are people with SMD, who may represent a danger to others. "This measure is unconstitutional and unacceptable in both the European democracy and the civilization in which we live."...
We will not use this as an excuse, but instead and as long as conditions remain unchanged, we will do everything we can to deal with this problem the best way. It is our main priority to elaborate a plan of action to deal with the mentally ill who are imprisoned, not only because of the distortion this causes in a system which is not prepared to deal with the reality, but also because of the suffering of those affected by these pathologies who find themselves in an environment which is unable to help them with their condition..."
"The burden of the social stigma of the mentally ill is overwhelming, and rejection as well as demand for them to be alienated is not the solution."

An initiative of Fundacion Manantial, an Integral Care Plan for People with SMD affected by the penitentiary system is being prepared. Throughout this plan based on the strength of responsible and sensitive institutions, we will try to foster collaboration to prevent this problem, to intervene in the penitentiaries directly, as well as to promote alternative measures contained in our legislation.
