CODE OF ETHICS

1.- THE INSTITUTION'S GENERAL CODE OF ETHICS.-

  • Loyalty to the mission: The goal of all organized activities must be that of providing social and integral care for people suffering from chronic mental illnesses.
  • Respect the principle of impartiality and non-discrimination when determining who among people with chronic mental illnesses will benefit from foundation activities, without undermining the ability to reasonably evaluate the assumption of very serious responsibilities for which the institution may lack adequate resources or infraestructure.
  • Commitment to the permanent dedication of the Foundation's current and future assets to the fulfillment of its mission.
  • Commitment to austere management.
  • Commitment to transparency in accounting, patrimony and administration of the Foundation and in all detailed information requested by the Protectorate (Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs) or other publicly or privately administrated institutions with a legitimate interest in it.
  • Commitment to quality management regarding:
    • Guidance services provided, or received by those who in one way or another render their services to the institution;
    • Health care of people with chronic mental illnesses and all public service management carried out by the Foundation;
    • The management of the projects it undertakes and the activities carried out by the Foundation.
  • Commitment to stable employment for the Foundation's human team, seeking as much as possible to enter into contracts of indefinite duration.
  • Independence: By independence of the Foundation we understand its:
    • Secular character: The Foundation will always respect the religious beliefs of all the members of its Board of Trustees, its staff and voluntary human team that collaborates in the fulfillment of its goals, and of course of those of the people suffering from chronic mental illnesses, whether or not they are guided by the insitution from whose activities they benefit. In the same manner, the Foundation shall have the right to establish agreements or collaborate with insitutions of diverse religious aims, provided that these agreements contribute to the fulfillment of the Foundation's own mission, and which under no circumstances may utilize the Foundation as an instrument for obtaining benefits for other entities or individuals.
    • Non-political character: The Foundation will fully respect the political ideology of the people that make up its Board of Trustees, its human team or of those who benefit from its mission and activities. The Foundation may establish permanent dialogue with the various existent political groups with the aim of contributing to its mission of availing social and integral care to people with chronic mental illnesses. Under no circumstances will the Foundation promote any given political party in ways other than publicly acknowledging the support received.
    • Independent economic interests: the Foundation will accept financial aid from companies and institutions which contribute to the fulfillment of its mission, and will go so far as to establish contracts requiring sponsorships or other methods of collaboration mandating the inclusion of institutional advertising on documents and brochures produced with the purpose of informing about the activities of the Foundation, provided the contributions are worth acknowledging. However, under no circumstances will the Foundation lend itself to commercial interests that could in the best of cases be interpreted as divergent from its mission to avail social and integral care to people with chronic mental illnesses. The Foundation's board may reject aid coming from companies whose management violates basic norms of social ethics, belittling other people's human rights.
    • Independence from other institutions: The Foundation may establish information mechanisms in accordance with its commitment to transparency with any organization or institution with a legitimate interest in it. It may also establish collaboration agreements on issues that may contribute to its mission of social and integral care of people with chronic mental illnesses.
    • In any event, management of the Foundation is solely governed by the decisions made by its administrative body. Collaborative agreements in no way represent limitations or a relinquishment of access to possible sources of financing or other essential matters which could affect the Foundation's viability or be detrimental to its necessary freedom of management.

2.- CODE OF ETHICS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.-

Being a member of the Board of Trustees of the independent Fundación Manantial para Enfermos Mentales means:

  • Carrying out one's duties without any remuneration.
  • Incompatibility and prevalence of duties in the face of any personal interests, which could reasonably produce a conflict of interests.
  • Express renunciation of reimbursements for personal expenses of any kind, even where allowed by the rules and statutes of the organization.
  • Avoid causing harm or damage through acts of negligence which are contrary to the statutes of the Foundation and to the humanitarian and social objectives it pursues.
  • Scrupulous respect for the principle of impartiality when determining which people with chronic mental illnesses will be able to benefit from the activities of the Foundation, especially when this concerns family members themselves or other closely related persons.
  • Commitment to contribute any personal social, economic and political connections to the organization that could contribute to the Foundation's mission.
  • Commitment to personal availability to perform the tasks and duties commended to the Board of Trustees and to act conscientiously in Board of Trustee meetings, as well as when voting on all agreements of said body which determine the institution's course of action.
  • Commitment to confidentiality ragarding the people with chronic mental disorders linked to the Foundation.
  • Permanent compliance with the Code of Ethics of the institution as a whole.
  • Commitment to personal self-evaluation with regards to the carrying out of ones duties.

3.- THE CODE OF ETHICS FOR PROFESSIONAL HUMAN RESOURCES HAVING A WORK RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ORGANIZATION.-

The Foundation's important mission of social and integral care of people with chronic mental illness means that the institution expects the following from its personnel:

  • High human and professional qualities when dealing with people suffering from chronic mental illness.
  • Unquestioned loyalty towards the institution and towards the other members of the team, with precedence over the small personal differences that may arise in any organization and regardless of difficulties and financial troubles that will often have to be made up for by personal effort.
  • Active participation in all teamwork and in handling all assigned duties, through the free expression of ideas and contribution of suggestions and improvements in the work.
  • A commitment to confidentiality with regards to those people with chronic mental illnesses whom they work with.
  • Assumption of the Code of Ethics of the institution as a whole.
  • The commitment to periodical personal self-evaluation of all work performed either individually or as part of a team.

4.- VOLUNTEERS' CODE OF ETHICS.-

Volunteers in the foundation must have:

  • A commitment to personal availability for all support tasks assigned to them by the institution's team of profesionals.
  • A positive attitude in order to make up for the deficiencies of the organization resulting from austere management and a lack of resources.
  • A highly humane attitude when dealing with people with chronic mental illnesses.
  • The capacity to assimilate the training provided by the institution in order to complete assigned tasks.
  • A commitment to confidentiality regarding those people with chronic mental illnesses whom they work with.
  • Assumption of the Code of Ethics of the institution as a whole.
